An AI-ready design system is a system with judgement in it.

Generated surfaces make building faster. They also multiply the chances for an interface to become generic, inconsistent, or unsafe. Better constraints keep the output usable.

The real shift

AI can produce a plausible screen in seconds. Plausibility is a low bar. A product still needs a point of view, reliable states, accessible interaction, and visual decisions that mean the same thing across the product.

The system becomes the context around generation: tokens with semantic names, components with clear contracts, patterns with documented states, and examples that show where variation is allowed.

What gets made explicit

We write down the rules a person or an agent can follow.

  • Semantic colour, spacing, type, and elevation tokens
  • Component anatomy and purposeful variants
  • Approved patterns for dense, high-consequence surfaces
  • Content and interaction constraints alongside the visual ones

The test

Could a new interface be generated quickly, then reviewed against a shared language that lives outside one designer’s memory? When the answer is yes, the system has become operating infrastructure. Until then it is a style guide.
